Microscopes and Cells

  • Unit 2 Notes

    Cell Theory:

1)Cells are the building blocks of life.

    2) All living things have cells.

    3) Only cells can make other cells.

Cells are made up of 4 major macromolecules. (protein, carbohydrate, lipid, nucleic acid)

There are two different types of organisms.  Multicellular and unicellular.

Multicellular has many cells, unicellular has only one cell.

There are two types of cells.  Eukaryotic and Prokaryotic.

Eukaryotic – has a nucleus and membrane bound organelle

Prokaryotic – does not have a nucleus or membrane bound organelles

    Organelles: organs inside a cell

    -------------*************-------------*************--------

Membrane: Acts like a door, lets things in and out of a cell

Nucleus: The brain of the cell, contains the DNA

Mitochondria: The power in a cell (like a battery), ATP (energy) is created here

Cytoplasm – juice or jelly inside the cell that facilitates movement

Vacuole – sac like structure that holds waste/water

    Ribosomes – make protein

ER (smooth and rough): processes ribosomes – like school – the ribosomes go through it and end up in the golgi body – rough processes ribosomes, smoothe processes lipids

Golgi Body: Process and packs proteins and gives them a more specialized job (like college)

Lysosome: Digests waste in the cell (like a stomach)

Vesicle – ribosomes wrapped in the ER/Golgi Body

     Plant Cell Only

Chloroplasts – plants source of food

Cell Wall – added support for cells found only in plants

     ****************---------------------------******************************

Structure and Function – The structure of an organism is related to the function of its parts.  The shape of the organ/organ system/cell/tissue is related to its function (or job).

Shape and function are directly related. Organelles and cells are shaped a certain way because they have a certain purpose, fulful a specific function/job.

    The organization of living things:

Cell – basic unit of life

Tissues – a bunch of similar cells working together to perform a similar function

Organ – many tissues working together to perform a similar function

Organ System – many organs working together to perform a similar task

Organism – a complicated living thing, which uses multiple organ systems with specialized cells to create homeostasis.

Three advantages to being multicellular – multicellular organisms Live Longer, Have Specialized Cells and can Grow Larger.

There are two types of cells.  Eukaryotic and Prokaryotic.

Eukaryotic – has a nucleus and membrane bound organelle

Prokaryotic – does not have a nucleus or membrane bound organelles

Our first major at home assignment is the Science Multicultural Project - November 7th due date

It is considered an 50% test grade

Part 1 30%- (Chose a scientist, draw or print (in color) a flag from the country the scientist is from, summarize the scientists' main contribution and give the birth and death of your scientist)

Part 2 40% - In Open Ended Format - as in paragraph format - Your scientist has impacted not just his/her culture or community but the world at large. Imagine life without your scientists; contribution. What would life be like?)

Part 3 30% - All about you - where are you from, what's your nationality (draw or print a flag (in color) list national past time, export/import or fun fact of that country), do you have brother/sisters/family life?, favorite color? band? fun fact about you?

Marking Period Ends November 14 - All make up work due November 10 in order to have ample time to grade it.
