The overall goal of the elementary art program is to provide a wide variety of experiences in the visual arts for kindergarten through fifth grade students. Students will understand how artwork is created from its media, technique and process; the structure of artwork and it’s functions; how to identify, analyze and select subject matter, symbols and ideas for personal/cultural expression; how historical and cultural contexts provide meaning for works of art, and how to assess the merits of their own artworks and the artworks of others. Originality, creativity and self-expression are stressed through development of each unit taught.
Your child had art today! We learned about basic responsibilities while in the art room, discussed art and the types of creations we will be making this year.
Student responsibilities:
1. Follow directions.
2. Stay in your seat.
3. Use materials properly and clean up.
4. Raise your hand with questions or comments.
5. Be kind to everyone.
This year your child will be creating art using a range of materials. They will learn about various artists and cultures and their influence on art. They will have art displayed throughout the school and some even throughout the community. They will also learn about critiquing art.
Pablo Picasso once said, “All children are artists. The problem is how to remain an artist once they grow up.” My goal is to show each student that they are an artist and encourage them to appreciate and pursue art as they continue into adulthood.
I look forward to a successful, creative year with your child! If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me at 732-222-3215.
