New Jersey Student Learning Standards

  • Students will be working toward mastering each of the New Jersey Student Learning Standards for English Language Arts grades 11-12 by the end of this school year.

    Reading Literature (fiction):

    RL.1 - Cite text evidence

    RL.2 - Determine & analyze themes

    RL.3 - Analyze author’s choices about story development

    RL.4 - Determine meaning of words/phrases, including figurative language

    RL.5 - Analyze author’s choices about text structure

    RL.6 - Analyze unique points of view (satire, sarcasm, irony)

    RL.7 - Analyze/evaluate multiple interpretations of the same text

    RL.9 - Knowledge of texts from 18th, 19th, and early 20th century works

    RL.10 - Read/comprehend complex fiction works


    Reading Informational Text (nonfiction):

    RI.1 - Cite text evidence

    RI.2 - Determine & analyze themes

    RI.3 - Analyze how ideas/events develop through texts

    RI.4 - Determine meaning of words/phrases, including figurative language

    RI.5 - Analyze author’s choices about text structure

    RI.6 - Analyze unique points of view (satire, sarcasm, irony)

    RI.7 - Evaluate information presented in different media/formats

    RI.8 - Evaluate important U.S. texts & their application

    RI.9 - Analyze 17th/18th/19th foundational U.S. documents for themes/purposes

    RI.10 - Read/comprehend complex nonfiction works



    W.1 - Write analytical arguments to support claims, using evidence

    W.2 - Write analytical informative/explanatory texts

    W.3 - Write narratives (stories)

    W.4 - Write clearly, with organization/style appropriate to audience/purpose

    W.5 - Strengthen writing with the writing process (plan/edit/revise)

    W.6 - Use technology to produce/publish writing

    W.7 - Complete research projects

    W.8 -  Gather relevant information from print/digital sources, avoiding plagiarism

    W.9 - Gather evidence from literary/informational sources

    W.10 - Write over short and extended time frames, depending on purpose


    Speaking & Listening:

    SL.1 - Participate in collaborative discussions

    SL.2 - Integrate source information in a variety of formats & evaluate their credibility

    SL.3 - Evaluate a speaker’s view, rhetoric, reasoning

    SL.4 - Present information, findings, supporting evidence
