Unit 4 Osmosis/Diffusion/Cell Transport

    Cell Membrane - semi permeable (like a bouncer or a door - lets things in and out) - helps control homeostasis

    Osmosis - the movement of water from high concentration to low concentration (passive)

    Diffusion – the movement of any molecules from high to low concentration (passive)

    Passive Transport - osmosis, does not use energy, goes with the flow from high to low

    Active Transport -  uses energy - moves from low to high - goes against the flow

    Endocytosis - bringing into cell like nutrients (active)

    Exocytosis - exiting cell like waste (active)

    Homeostasis - keeping a stable environment - cell membrane responsible

    Hypotonic (will grow) - more water will increase its size

    Hypertonic will shrink

    Feedback Mechanism - ways to keep your body in homeostasis (examples, sweating, sneezing, yawning etc)

    Mitochondria break down the glucose in cellular respiration.  

    Chemical Energy - stored in food

    Sunlight = Chemical Energy

    Photosynthesis creates glucose and oxygen which the mitochondria use for cellular respiration.  In cellular respiration ATP and carbon dioxide and water are given off, which the plants use for photosynthesis. It’s a beautiful cycle.

    Photosynthesis -  makes food - Converts cabon dioxide and water into sugar (Glucose) and oxygen – gas given off is Oxygen - Carbon Dioxide plus Water (and sunlight) = Sugar and Oxygen

    Cellular Respiration - is to get energy - it stores chemical energy - gives off Carbon Dioxide and Water -  is a process hwere oxygen and lucose go through a chemiical reaction and release energy. All living things need energy so all living things carry out cellular

    Fermentation – just like cellular respiration except it doesn’t use oxygen.


    Oxygen plus glucose = ATP

    Photosynthesis produces Oxygen

    Cellular Respiration produces Carbon Dioxide

    Heterotrophs - consumers

    Autotrophs - producers
